Shotgun shell casings found on Neptune Beach over the holiday weekend near several dead seabirds have experts looking for answers as to why the internationally protected birds where killed, who killed them and whether the shots were fired on the beach or out in open water.
About a dozen dead birds — pelicans and seagulls — were found on the beach near the shell casings, said Cindy Mosling, founder of the Bird Emergency Aid & Kare Sanctuary on Big Talbot Island.
“The shells were on the beach so I don’t think they [the birds] were shot over the water,” she said.
