Jacksonville man convicted Thursday in shooting death of cousin during 2014 armed robbery

A 31-year-old Jacksonville man whose cousin was shot to death while the two were attempting to rob a man in 2014 was convicted Thursday and faces up to life in prison, according to the State Attorney’s Office.

John Ray Smith was found guilty of conspiracy to commit armed robbery and second-degree murder, according to the State Attorney’s Office.

Smith and his cousin, 27-year-old Christopher Lee Seymour, armed themselves with a gun, handcuffs, a bulletproof vest and police badges before they went to their target’s apartment to try to rob or kill him, prosecutors said.
