Dry weather, light rain mean wildfires burning in Northeast Florida

Dry weather and intense heat mixed with occasional lightning strikes have firefighters working 23 fires in Duval, St. Johns, Clay and Putnam counties, according to the Florida Forest Service.

All but two of those fires are 100 percent contained — which means they are contained by fire lines but still hot and smoking or smoldering — and that doesn’t mean the hot spots won’t flare up again and spread, said Annaleasa Winter, a wildfire mitigation specialist with the Forest Service in Jacksonville.
