A man who said he suffers from mental illness and was beaten by a corrections officer in 2012 while two other officers watched when he was an inmate in the Duval County jail was awarded compensation Thursday at the conclusion of a four-day federal jury trial in Jacksonville.
The jury awarded 53-year-old Marvin Lee Johnson $13,000 in punitive damages after they agreed there was malicious and sadistic behavior on the part of the guards, said Neil Henrichsen, the attorney who represented Johnson.
