Johnny Marveil Mooney made a promise when his brother was dying of cancer in 2013.
That promise meant flying back and forth from Cincinnati to Jacksonville to look after his brother’s children.
The children are grown, but Mooney, 39, still made the trip two or three times a year to let them know they had family who cared for them in Ohio, Mooney’s sister said Tuesday.
She said Mooney was in Jacksonville on one of those trips to check on his extended family when he was shot to death at his hotel Saturday afternoon.
